A rare Axminster rug

The present Axminister rug is a rare survivor, from the mid nineteenth century, as very few were made, most Axministers carpets are commissioned in large format sizes. The small rugs were generally used in front of fireplaces sitting on top of a similar designed larger version.,or as bedroom rugs, usually found as a pair, one for either side of the bed.
With the use of the ton sur ton floral field, this helps break up the monotony of a plain single ground colour, which is the norm and not so desirable. Here the emphassis is on the border which contains various elaborate floral details.
