A rare Hadji Jalili Tabriz carpet
Persia, circa 1890.
12ft 4in x 8ft 7in : 375cm x 261cm
The merchants of Tabriz were responsible for the revival of carpet weaving in Persia at the end of the nineteenth century, primarily to satisfy the new demand from the west. The most prominent workshop was supervised by Hadji Jalili, whose classical designs were applied with light colours of subtle tones, popular for the export clientele.
An unusual detail is in the application of the same ivory colour for the part of the repeated medallions and the border, this creates a harmonious balanced carpet that can be used in either a classical or modern decorative scheme. The background colour of a light pistachio yellow is exceptionally rare.
