A rare Gerus Bidar gallery carpet
Persia, circa 1890.
12ft 2in x 5ft 11in : 372cm x 180cm
The town of Bidjar in North West Persia Kurdistan, became noted for producing the most robust and hard wearing woven carpets of high quality using lustrous wool and strong vegetable dyes. Bidjars were popular with the Persian nobility and the new western markets.
The rare Gerus design of archaic arabesques and connecting stems creates a fantastical ambiance and with the colouring of a dark blue background together with white outlines, this heightens the drama.
