A rare Pair of Aubusson Entre Fenetres
France, circa 1880.
Length: 9in 6ft (290cm) Width: 4ft (122cm)
These rare pair of Entre Fenetres tapestry hangings were used between windows and differ from the norm in both design and colour.
The design is based on the oriental tree of life which was taken from Indian chintz and crewelwork of the 17th & 18th centuries, a period when all types of goods were imported from the orient, especially by the East India Company: Chinese wallpaper, porcelain, screens and lacquer ware.
The colour is unusual after lacquer furniture in the Japanese manner, popular at the time in Western European furnishings for: commodes, bureau cabinets, chests and screens. These entre fenetres would compliment the furnishings and create an ensemble as a whole, evoking exotic and distant lands.
