An exceptional Hadji Jalili Tabriz carpet,
Persia, circa 1890.
14ft 5in x 10ft 10in : 439cm x 330cm
The merchants of Tabriz were responsible for the revival of carpet weaving in Persia at the end of the nineteenth century, primarily to satisfy the new demand from the western markets. The most prominent workshop was supervised by Hadji Jalili, whose classical designs were applied with light colours of subtle tones, popular for the export clientele.
An unusual detail is in the application of the same colour for the background and the border also the use of wide guard stripe inner borders, which gives an architectural edge. The design, called Gerus, is perhaps the least encountered form this workshop and with the wider format than usual allows the design to breathe, normally they come narrow and constricted. These factors create a harmonious balanced carpet which can be used in any environment whether a classical or modern decorative scheme.
