An Oushak small carpet,
Turkey c1870.
7ft x 6ft 8in : 214cm x 202cm
The town of Oushak in Western Turkey, at the end of the nineteenth century, became the centre for carpet production for export to the new western markets of Europe and America. Many foreign companies had their offices there to supervise the production, the workshops were mainly run by Greek and Armenian merchants.
The present carpet with a typical design is of small square format, which would indicate a commissioned piece. The carpet is in good condition and retains original colour.
