A rare Gerus Bidar runner
Persia, circa 1890.
9ft 9in x 3ft 11in : 298cm x 119cm
The town of Bidjar in North West Persia Kurdistan, became noted for producing the most robust and hard wearing woven carpets of high quality using lustrous wool and strong vegetable dyes. Bidjars were popular with the Persian nobility and the new western markets.
The rare Gerus design, which one encounters on large format carpets, of archaic arabesques and connecting stems creates a fantastical ambiance and with the colouring of a rare madder red background together with white outlines, heightens the drama especially when applied to the runner format.
