A rare Oushak rug.
Turkey, circa 1900.
7ft 1in x 4ft 2in : 216cm x 128cm
Numerous rugs were woven in Western Turkey, mainly in the town of Oushak, under the supervision of Armenian and Greek merchants, for export to the Western markets.
The designs were enlarged in keeping with architectural proportions, incorporating large wide borders, thus keeping a balance with the scale of a room. The colours employed were of lighter shades as demanded by the Western clients. Of particular note is the rare small size for a rug from the Oushak area.
