A rare Gerus Bidjar rug
Persian, circa 1890.
7ft 6in x 4ft 2in : 230cm x 126cm
The town of Bidjar in North West Persia Kurdistan, became noted for producing the most robust and hard wearing woven carpets of high quality using lustrous wool and strong vegetable dyes. Bidjars were popular with the Persian nobility and the new western markets.
The rare Gerus design of archaic arabesques and connecting stems creates a fantastical ambiance and with the colouring of a dark blue background together with white outlines, this heightens the drama. We have not encountered a rug size Bidjar with the Gerus design, all are generally carpet sizes, this would indicate that the rug was produced for personal use rather than as a commercial product.
