An Oushak carpet
Western Turkey, circa 1880
18ft x 12ft 9in : 549cm x 389cm
Numerous carpets were woven in the western part of Turkey, mainly in the town of Oushak and surrounding areas, under the supervision of Armenian and Greek merchants and also European concerns who had their agents there, making for export to supply the new demand for carpets from the Western markets at the end of the 19th century.
The bold palmettes with interlocking stems on a pale ocra background and wide old white border, creates an imposing yet subtle ambience. The lighter colour combinations were popular, at the turn of the century, for the European and North American clients, whereas the traditional colours of red/blue combinations remained mainly for the domestic market.
The Oushak became a popular style of carpet, to create a relaxing mood, ideal for less formal rooms of the country houses and today can be used in either traditional or modern interior design schemes.
