A Swedish carpet, designed by Marta Maas-Fjetterstrom (1837 – 1941).
Signed MMF. Circa 1935.

7ft 4in x 5ft 5in   :   223cm x 165cm
Inspired by the Arts & Crafts movement in Scandinavia, Marta Maas-Fjetterstrom designed carpets and hangings in the traditional hand-woven techniques. In 1919 she founded a weaving workshop in Bastad, South Sweden.

Maas-Fjetterstrom connections with America date back to the 1929 exhibition of modern rugs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, in which she represented Sweden at the exhibition and again in 1937 her rugs were on show at the same museum.

Of note is that the carpet is in good, clean condition, as with the raised pile most surviving examples are worn, also of note is the original platted fringes are still intact as usually they are missing.
