Kanholmen
A rare Swedish modernist pile rug, designed by Strage and signed, dated 19-7-49.
8ft 3in x 5ft 6in : 252 x 164cm
The C.A., in the inscription probably stands for Cranbrook Academy, Bloomfields Hills, Michigan, U.S.A., were many Swedish designers were working during this period.
Weaving in Sweden was a woman’s art in a country where the home, writes Barbara Klein in Swedish Folk Art,: All Tradition Is Change, is: the hub of life, the focus of dreams and ambitions.
Interestingly, although the artist has employed traditional weaving techniques, she has expressed in this carpet her own vision, inspired by the sea, depicting white-capped waves in motion. Unlike other Swedish carpets of which many have been produced, the Kanholmen is the only one we have encountered and can be considered a rare and probably unique example.
