In 1968, Charles Slatkin Galleries invited some twenty artists to supply designers for tapestries for their exhibition American Tapestries, these artists included: Robert Motherwell, Alexander Calder, Robert Indiana, Roy Lichtenstein and of course Warhol.
These tapestries were not of the flat woven Aubusson type, but of knotted pile, which 'produced a warmer, softer and more luminous effect' (Slatkin cat.,). The images of the Pop-Art era could be transferred to any media. The Flowers as an image of that period is perhaps one of Warhol's most memorable and iconic works. Leo Castelli had a Flowers tapestry in his collection.
