A fine Ziegler Sultanabad Carpet
Persia, circa 1880
13ft 8in x 10ft 7in : 400cm x 324cm
In 1876, the Manchester based Swiss firm of Ziegler and Co. became the first European concern to establish their own looms in Sultanabad, Persia, for the production of carpets specifically for the Western markets. The designs used were mainly repeated all-over patterns, though Ziegler realised that by using the principles of architectural proportions, made the motifs much larger and incorporated wide borders, thus keeping a balance with the scale of a room.
The bold design of this carpet with enlarged palmettes, sickle leaves and connecting stems, exemplifies a Ziegler at its extreme, even verging towards a fantasy. What is also of note is the Modernist tendencies in the design, the palmettes are just a skeletal outline drawing, freeing the carpet from the usual block colour palmettes frequently encountered. On a rare Tabac d’Havane, honey-coloured field within an elegant architectural border, again with rare colour of cinnamon/cognac, an exceptional example of an early period Ziegler.
