A Karabagh carpet
Armenia, c1890
15ft 3in x 10ft 9in : 465cm x 328cm
When the Russian military officers were in the Caucasus during the Crimea war, they gave European influenced designs for carpets as they were fashionable at the time in St. Petersburg. These floral designs, taken from French needlework, remained with the weavers and continued to be produced, particularily in the Karabagh region, a case of cultural incursion as traditional Armenian designs are of geometric form.
The present carpet is exceptionally rare as for the large format and colour, normally black ground but here a pleasing chesnut with matching border. The drawing of the floral detail is accurate, most example are more geometric in the execution of the design.
