The Rose

A rare Arts & Crafts carpet, designed by C.F.A. Voysey, made by Alexander Morton & Co., Killybegs, Donegal, Ireland, c1900.

13ft 6in x 13ft 9in : 410cm x 420cm
Voysey, though he was an architect, proved his versatility in designing for wallpaper, fabrics, metalwork, furniture and carpets. In the September 1893 issue of The Studio, Voysey when interviewed on his thoughts regarding inspiration from nature, says ‘…although he has gone directly to Nature, his work will not resemble (that of) any of his predecessors, he has become an inventor.’ Though Voysey followed on from William Morris, who was looking back, Voysey was looking forward, the Rose carpet illustrates his point.

Though the Rose design has been woven on numerous occasions, each carpet has their own individual character, the present carpet, of rare square format, achieved by enlargening the motifs and border, allowing the design to be wider than normal. The overblown design adds to the fantasy, the size would indicate a commissioned piece. The colours employed create a harmonious and relaxing mood, making this fine carpet able to be placed within a traditional or contemporary interior design scheme.

The Victoria and Albert Museum in London has in their collection a Rose carpet, though it has large sections cut out, inv no: T.58.1976.
