A French needlework carpet

Circa 1850.

Provenance: Chateau des Chapelieres, Anjou, Brittany, France.

During the Victorian period in England and throughout Europe, there was a fashion for the crafts of needlework for all manor of home decoration: stools, bell pulls, cushions and carpets. The design of this needlework carpet influenced those of the Ukraine and Bessarabia for their own carpets and kilims as this French style was popular with the Russian bourgeoise.

Of note is the exceptionally elaborate border containing bunches of grapes. The colouring with the Tabac de Havane ground  is rare as generally they come with black or brown backgrounds.
